Each year the LA Auto Show hosts the Design Challenge. This is a competition where major design studios from Southern California flex their creative muscle and show off what they can really do. However, each year designers must adhere to a pre-determined theme.
For the 2010 Design Challenge, designers were told to design a vehicle that addresses society’s shift toward minimizing consumption of earth’s resources. The objective was to envision an efficient, light-weight, four-passenger vehicle that would not exceed 1,000 pounds.
Although Volvo didn’t take home the top prize, they did show off a very unique concept that’s propelled by compressed air motors. Its light weight is achieved because it lacks a heavy internal combustion engine, and because designers took an integrated approach to designing the chassis, interior and, suspension.
